Date: 2023-05-11 04:14 am (UTC)Gu Xiang freezes at the harsh tone in Luo Fumeng's voice. The ground in front of her is littered with broken walnut shells. Quickly, she bundles up the rope in her hand and hides it behind her back as she turns. "Luo-yi!" she chirps, grinning.
Luo Fumeng normally crosses a courtyard with the slow magnificence of a storm cloud. Now, she hastens across it, reaching out to grab Gu Xiang, patting her shoulder as if she'll find contraband there, then turns her. Gu Xiang tries to slip the rope away from her eyes, but she doesn't have the kind of sleeves you can hide things in. Luo Fumeng grabs it and shakes it at her, eyes wild, before she seems to remember herself and takes a deep breath, nostrils flaring.
"This is not a toy, and I am not teaching you to use it so you can show off," Luo Fumeng says very quietly.
Gu Xiang clenches her jaw. "How am I supposed to get good at it if I only practice when you have time for me?" she asks.
"How are you going to get good at it if you're dead?" Luo Fumeng snaps.
If it was her zhuren talking, she'd roll her eyes and talk back. Luo Fumeng does a lot to protect her girls, but she doesn't tolerate disrespect. Gu Xiang presses her lips tightly together until she can stop her protests from spilling out. "When will Luo-yi have time, then?" she finally asks, her voice smaller than she wants it to be.
Luo Fumeng sighs. "Not for some time. Be patient. Let the girls take care of you."
After she goes, Gu Xiang slumps to the ground, pouting. Zhuren is busy killing people who got mad he took over as Ghost Valley's master, and Gu Xiang thinks Luo Fumeng must be helping him somehow, besides keeping an eye on her. No one will tell her anything. She's supposed to wait here and play stupid games while they work.
"I'm not a child, anyway," she says to the empty air. "I'm a ghost."
